Bringing Essential Dental Care Directly to the Backstretch

Access to quality dental care can be a challenge for many backstretch workers due to transportation, scheduling, language, and financial barriers. To help address those challenges, the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association proudly operates the Mobile Dentist Program, bringing professional dental services directly to Laurel Park and making care more accessible than ever before.

Made possible through funding support from the Laurel Multiservice Center, the Mobile Dentist program provides comprehensive dental services free of charge to eligible backstretch workers and horsemen. By delivering care directly on the grounds at Laurel Park, the program eliminates many of the obstacles that often prevent individuals from receiving timely treatment.

serviceS available:

• Dental cleanings
• X-rays
• Fillings
• Root Canals
• Dentures
• Extractions
• Comprehensive Dental Evaluations
• Follow-up Treatment Planning

The Mobile Dentist operates with multiple treatment chairs and dental professionals, allowing the program to serve numerous patients during each visit. Demand for the program has been tremendous, with appointment days frequently filling to capacity and many participants receiving care that had been delayed for months or even years.

To improve efficiency and patient experience, the MTHA developed a custom online registration, intake, and scheduling system specifically for the program. Patients can complete their medical and dental history electronically before their appointment, upload required documentation, and receive automated appointment reminders by text message. This streamlined process allows dental professionals to focus more time on patient care and helps maximize the number of individuals served during each visit.

The Mobile Dentist program has become one of the MTHA’s most impactful health and welfare initiatives, improving access to care while helping horsemen maintain their overall health and quality of life. The strong response from Maryland’s backstretch community has demonstrated the tremendous need for accessible healthcare services and reinforced the importance of continuing programs that directly benefit the men and women who care for Maryland’s racehorses every day.
