Backstretch Counseling Program

Support For Life's Challenges – On and Off the Racetrack.

The Horsemen’s Counseling Program provides confidential guidance, support, and resources to members of Maryland’s backstretch community facing personal, emotional, and financial challenges. For many participants, the program has been life-changing, helping individuals and families overcome difficult circumstances and build a stronger foundation for the future.

Life on the backstretch can be demanding, and the pressures of work, family, finances, and personal struggles can sometimes feel overwhelming. Through the Horsemen’s Counseling Program, backstretch workers have access to compassionate assistance designed to address a wide range of issues, including substance abuse and addiction, depression, anxiety, marital and family concerns, financial hardships, grief, and other personal challenges.

The program is overseen by Jessica Hammond and operates as a collaborative partnership between the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, the Maryland Jockey Club, and the Maryland Horsemen’s Assistance Foundation. Together, these organizations are committed to ensuring that Maryland’s horsemen have access to the support services they need to maintain healthy, productive, and fulfilling lives.
All counseling services are provided in a confidential and respectful manner. Individuals seeking assistance can do so without fear of judgment, knowing that the program’s sole purpose is to help members of the racing community navigate difficult situations and access the resources available to them.

Whether facing a temporary setback or a long-term challenge, horsemen and backstretch workers are encouraged to reach out. Help is available, and no one has to face life’s difficulties alone.
