Beyond The Wire

Maryland’s Commitment to Thoroughbred Aftercare

The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association is proud to have been a founding force behind Beyond The Wire, Maryland’s official Thoroughbred aftercare program and one of the nation’s leading racetrack-based retirement and placement initiatives.

Launched through a collaborative effort of the MTHA, the Maryland Jockey Club, the Maryland Horse Breeders Association, Maryland jockeys, and other industry stakeholders, Beyond The Wire was created with a simple but important mission: to ensure that every Maryland Thoroughbred has access to a safe, responsible, and meaningful transition when its racing career comes to an end.
Since its inception in 2017, Beyond The Wire has helped place more than 1,000 retired racehorses into carefully screened second careers and retirement homes. Working exclusively with accredited aftercare organizations and qualified adopters, the program provides horse owners and trainers with trusted resources to retire their horses responsibly while maintaining the highest standards of equine welfare.

Beyond The Wire serves as Maryland racing’s “first exit” program, helping identify suitable placement opportunities before horses become at risk. Through veterinary evaluations, transportation assistance, aftercare partnerships, and ongoing oversight, the program creates a clear pathway from the racetrack to a successful second career.

The program reflects the MTHA’s long-standing belief that our responsibility to the horse extends far beyond the finish line. Thoroughbred aftercare is not an afterthought—it is an essential part of responsible horsemanship and a commitment shared by Maryland’s racing community.
Today, Beyond The Wire has become a nationally recognized model for racetrack-based aftercare, demonstrating how horsemen, breeders, racetracks, veterinarians, and industry organizations can work together to protect the welfare of Thoroughbreds throughout their lives.
