Recration Program

Building Community, Enriching Lives, and Supporting Maryland’s Backstretch Workforce

The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association is committed to enhancing the quality of life for the men and women who work on Maryland’s backstretch. Through its year-round Recreation Program, the MTHA provides opportunities for relaxation, social connection, entertainment, and access to essential services both on and off the racetrack.

The program features a wide variety of activities throughout the year, including weekly gatherings in the Track Kitchen and Recreation Room, complimentary meals, outdoor recreational outings, poker, golf and pool tournaments, and organized trips to popular destinations throughout Maryland and beyond. The MTHA also regularly provides free tickets to sporting events, including Baltimore Orioles and Chesapeake Baysox games.
A key component of the program is the MTHA Express, the Association’s dedicated transportation service. Driven by Recreation Coordinators Bryant Paz and Dan Mangum, the MTHA Express connects backstretch workers with recreational opportunities, community events, and essential services.
In addition to recreation activities, Mangum operates transportation services several days each week to assist horsemen with medical and dental appointments, grocery shopping, motor vehicle administration visits, and access to social service agencies. To ensure transportation is available, individuals are encouraged to contact Mangum before scheduling appointments whenever possible.

Upcoming activities and events are regularly posted in the Recreation Room and throughout the stable area. Because seating on the MTHA Express is limited, participants are encouraged to reserve their spots in advance.
