Providing Support, Security, and Peace of Mind for the Backstretch
The Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association is committed to improving the quality of life for the trainers, assistant trainers, exercise riders, grooms, hotwalkers, and other dedicated backstretch employees who care for Maryland’s Thoroughbred racehorses every day. Through its Benevolence Program, the MTHA provides a wide range of services and financial assistance designed to support the health, well-being, and stability of Maryland’s racing workforce.
Recognized as one of the most comprehensive horsemen’s assistance programs in the nation, the MTHA Benevolence Program invests significant resources each year to ensure that backstretch employees have access to essential services and support when they need it most.

BENEFITS and services may include:
• Medical and healthcare assistance
• Dental care services
• Eyeglasses and vision assistance
• Preventative healthcare programs, including flu vaccinations and cancer screenings
• Prescription assistance for qualifying individuals
• Meal subsidies for eligible backstretch employees
• Supplemental health and insurance benefits
• Cremation and burial assistance
• Emergency and hardship assistance through the MTHA and Maryland Horsemen’s Assistance Foundation

TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR BENEFITS:
Applicants must hold a valid Maryland Racing Commission license and have worked for a trainer stabled at Laurel Park for at least six months. Interested individuals should complete a registration form and submit it to the MTHA office. Certain assistance programs may require additional documentation or application materials. Requests for supplemental aid are reviewed by a committee to ensure resources are distributed fairly and effectively to those in need.
