MJC issues reminder on Laurel Park stable area safety protocols
Maryland Jockey Club officials Sept. 22 said they have found open-flame grills and cookers in use in the Laurel Park stable area and are urging all backstretch personnel to follow proper procedures.
"This practice poses significant risks to both our horses and our fellow workers, and it is in violation of the Anne Arundel Fire Code," the MJC said.
The MJC policy calls for no open-flame cooking in the barn area, and for those who do cook, the cooking device must be located at least 25 feet from any barn or building.
The following is the complete list of stable area safety rules:
• Smoking (and other sources of ignition) is (are) prohibited in and immediately outside of all barns.
• Chemicals (especially flammables and combustibles) must be properly labeled, handled and stored.
• Any chemical/fuel spills must be reported to MJC Security.
• Electrical equipment/appliances must be unplugged when not in use.
• No extension cords smaller than 14ga. (thickness) are allowed.
• No fans larger than 2 amps allowed in stable area.
• Access to fire extinguishers, sprinklers, and controls must be kept clear.
• Nothing should be attached to or hung to any fire sprinkler or gas pipes.
• 3-foot clearance around electrical panels, water heaters and boilers is required.
• Notify the MJC Facilities Department with any tripped breakers or fire alarm notifications immediately.
• All marked exits shall be kept clear.
• Manure (straw or shavings) must be placed in proper bins and covered.
• Areas outside of barns must be swept not hosed down.
• Storm drains must be kept clear of dirt, straw, and shavings.
• All soaps and detergents used in stable area must be biodegradable.
• Horse wash stalls must be used where provided.
• Water must be turned off when not in use.
• All trash must be placed inside dumpsters.
• Trash should not be deposited in manure bins.
• Dumpsters must be closed when not in use.
