Backstretch Recreation Program Continues To Thrive at Laurel Park

The Backstretch Recreation Program at Laurel Park, facilitated by Bryant Paz and Dan Mangum under the direction of the MTHA, continues to be a vital part of daily life for workers on the backstretch. The program features a full calendar of engaging events both on and off-site, with a strong lineup scheduled throughout July and additional activities in development for August and beyond.
While many members of the racing community will spend time traveling to Colonial Downs in Virginia and Delaware Park during the summer break in live racing at Laurel Park, the barn area remains active with stabling and daily training. The recreation program offers valuable opportunities for workers who remain at Laurel to socialize, relax, and build a sense of community.
Paz has maintained a strong focus on offering events that have been well-received over the past year—such as cookouts, tournaments, and day trips—while also developing new activities to keep things fresh and inclusive.
But the recreation program is doing more than just providing entertainment—it’s also playing a critical role in supporting the emotional and mental well-being of the backstretch community. Jessica Hammond, the MTHA Counseling Administrator, has integrated the program into her therapeutic outreach with individuals facing isolation, depression, or adjustment challenges.
“Many people who work on the backstretch come from other tracks or other countries and may experience feelings of loneliness and disconnection when they first arrive,” Hammond said. “I use the recreation program as part of the support plan I develop with them. I introduce them to Bryant so they have a familiar face, and I encourage them to attend events and trips.
“Oftentimes, it results in them making friends, feeling more engaged, and improving their overall mood. It’s also a great way for individuals I work with to practice social skills we’ve developed in our sessions. Recreational outlets are incredibly important for maintaining good mental health.”
As the program continues to evolve, it’s become a key part of MTHA’s broader mission to enhance quality of life on the backstretch and to build a stronger, healthier racing community.
