Optional Price Hike In Maiden-Claiming Races Approved

The MTHA Board of Directors has approved a recommendation by its Purse Committee regarding claiming prices in maiden races.

Beginning June 1, 2024, the connections of Maryland-bred and Maryland-sired horses will have the option to run for a higher claiming prices in maiden-claiming races. The tags would increase 20%-25%.

For maiden-claiming $12,500, the Maryland-bred or Maryland-sired price would be $15,000; for maiden $20,000, it would be $25,000; and for maiden $30,000, it would be $37,500. The Maryland Jockey Club signed off on the proposal.

Horsemen are reminded of other changes approved earlier this year by the MTHA and MJC that will also take effect June 1 at Laurel Park.

The bottom claiming price of $5,000 will be eliminated and the bottom increased to $7,500-$6,000. The latter will replace the current $8,000-$6,000 level, and there will be $7,500-$6,000 claimers for non-winners of four races lifetime or a race in the previous six months. Races for a tag of $5,000 or less will not be considered for eligibility or allowances.

During the transition, $5,000 starter allowances will continue to be carded at the Laurel summer meet and at the Maryland State Fair at Timonium before they are discontinued.
