Richard Hoffberger has served as President of the MTHA since the organization’s founding. An active owner/breeder, Mr. Hoffberger is deeply involved with racing – as a horseman, a horsemen’s representative and a businessman.
He is president of The Hoffberger Insurance Group, Hoffberger Insurance Kentucky, and a principal in Wire2Wire Veterinary Products, a distribution company based in Kentucky.
Mr. Hoffberger grew up around horses, as a son of the late owner/breeder Jerold C. Hoffberger. A graduate of the University of Maryland, he is a lifelong resident of Baltimore County, where he lives with his wife, Judy.
Says Mr. Hoffberger: "The agreement that we have with the race track to run 146 days has provided us with an opportunity, although one on a short string, to work towards stabilizing the business. Reaching that agreement was a difficult goal, and was accomplished with a lot of support from the local racing community. Our goal has been and continues to be to maintain a year round racing program in Maryland. The slots revenue has provided increased purses and additional revenue will come in the future. Working with the Legislature to try to provide additional advantages to our business that is regulated is the primary objective in the coming years. We have to stay a few steps ahead of industry trends that are brought about by the pressures on our business that are occurring on a national basis. The MTHA must be creative in our promotion of our racing schedule to continue our (almost) yearly program to grow."
