Health Fair Expands with CPR, AED, and Narcan Demonstrations

The upcoming MTHA Health Fair at Laurel Park on Tuesday, September 30 will feature hands-only CPR, AED, and Narcan demonstrations—skills that can save lives in critical moments. The Maryland Jockey Club EMS crew will be in the Recreation Room throughout the day to lead demonstrations and provide practice mannequins so participants can gain hands-on experience.
The Health Fair runs from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and also offers free flu shots, bloodwork, and blood-pressure checks for horsemen and backstretch workers.
The emphasis on emergency training follows a probable life-saving response at Laurel Park on the morning of September 25. Jockey agent Simon Purdy collapsed while speaking with trainer Carlos Mancilla and jockey Johan Rosado. Mancilla quickly called for help and began resuscitation efforts.
Tim Tullock, TMJC Compliance and Safety Officer, arrived within moments and administered CPR until EMS reached the scene. Purdy was revived, transported to the hospital, and released with a clean bill of health after undergoing tests.
Jeff Kreimer, TMJC Director of Health and Safety, noted that plans are underway to schedule an additional dedicated safety class for trainers and backstretch personnel later in the year at Laurel Park, similar to the successful program held in 2024.
