Renovation of the main track at Laurel Park began as planned Aug. 21 as equipment began stripping away the surface to get to the base.
Removal of the surface is expected to take two days, and replacement of it another two days. The length of the project will hinge on the examination of the base, drainage improvements, and the weather.
There was a chance of thunderstorms the afternoon of Aug. 21 and, depending on the forecast, another chance Aug. 22. After that, however, the weather in central Maryland could be the nicest of the summer with clear skies and highs in the upper 70s and low 80s at least through Aug. 28.
Though Laurel is dark for live racing until Sept. 8, Maryland Jockey Club President Sal Sinatra said the hope is that training resumes quickly after the new cushion has had time to settle.
