The Maryland State Fair at Timonium is preparing the facility for this year’s seven-day meet that runs from Friday, Aug. 27, to Monday, Sept. 6.
Live racing will be held Aug. 27-29 and Sept. 3-6. There is a special first post time of 3 p.m. on opening day, which also is College Scholarship Day. Ten $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to full-time college students who pre-register and are in attendance.
First post on the other six racing days is 12:40 p.m.
The $75,000 Timonium Juvenile for 2-year-olds at 6 1/2 furlongs is scheduled for Aug. 29. The stakes offers an additional $25,000-$50,000 for eligible Maryland-bred and Maryland-sired horses. Grooms will be selected for best-turned-out horse awards in each race.
For the first time, purses at Timonium will be equal to those paid for all classes at Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course. The daily average is projected to be $280,000 based on the condition book.
A $40,000 trainers’ bonus program will be offered courtesy of the Maryland State Fair and Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association. The bonus money will be awarded as follows: $20,000 for trainers with 11 stalls or more at a Maryland Jockey Club facility, and $20,000 for those with 10 or fewer stalls.
Entries for opening day will be taken Tuesday, Aug. 24. Please contact the Timonium racing office 866-910-FAIR. For those stabled at Laurel and Pimlico, a shuttle is available. Those interested can contact Joe Sansosti at 301-266-0914.
